The threat of the Red Star is gone, so it seems, and has been for the past 700 turns. All the Weyrs of the Northern Continent have been deserted, allowing the Holders and Crafters to take over. Dragonriders have managed to take control of much of the Southern Continent, from the Great Bay in the west to the Two-Faced Mountain in the east. Two major Weyrs are now maintained, Southern Weyr being slightly smaller than the more recently established Lyralon Weyr.
Not all dragonriders live in the Weyrs of the south, however. Some return to the Northern Holds and Crafthalls to assist in any way they can, and any Master Crafter or Lord Holder can request help from the Weyrs.
The dragonriders established themselves as protectors of the watch whers and firelizards, strictly controlling the distribution of firelizard eggs, so that very few people possess them. The only queen wher resides at Lyralon Hold, her handler also doubling as the Hold's headwoman. Watch whers have become very rare creatures, causing their handlers to be most protective. As for the dragonriders themselves, their numbers have dwindled rapidly, with Lyralon Weyr boasting just over 200 riders. At last count, Pern was home to only about 350 riders.

Now, the Weyrs are encountering a new problem. With Lyralon Weyr's Senior Weyrwoman more than ready to retire, they find themselves with a severe shortage of candidates prepared to stand at the Hatching. Her aging queen, Ryath, broods over a final clutch of 17 eggs, paying special attention to the only queen egg to be clutched in several turns. Yet no Holders or Crafters are willing to present themselves as candidates.
As if this weren't enough, rumors are starting to crop up about Lyralon Hold's young Lord Holder, saying that perhaps he's not all he appears to be.
