My question is fairly simple. How much of X-men canon should we know to be able to roleplay here well. I, for example, have only seen the first movie and some of the first few episodes of the original TV series. Am I okay, or should I go find a wiki and read a little more?

I think you'll be ok. A fair number of us have not seen much more than the movies. If you have any questions, just ask staff, who are much more knowledgeable about the universe.
But all in all, you don't need to read more on a wiki. You'll get the feel for the SC version of the marvel universe quite quickly in RP, I think.
Which reminds me, I should start getting active again at some point.
