Thanks for taking the time to check out the site! Senseless Cruelty (aka SC) is an X-Men role-play, and obviously text-based. You can play a character from the movies, comics, cartoons- any of them. Although, do keep in mind that this is an X-Men RP, not just an open Marvel one. So, that means no Spider-Man, no Hulk, no other comic characters that are not actually 'X-Men'.
NOTICE: It has come to our attention that many people think it's okay to just take our rules and use them on their own sites as if they were their own. No, just no. We didn't take these rules from anywhere else; we wrote all this up from scratch. We've been working on and adding to these rules for over four years now. So, no, we don't appreciate lazy people ripping our rules that we put so much time and effort into. Please, don't steal our rules. Thank you.
To create a character and join the RP game, first you need to register an account for your character. You can do that by clicking on the 'Register' button at the top of the page, or you can click here.
About Your Account:
When posting on the boards, please refrain from coloring your text. It’s become a trend on other RP sites, and it was haunting SC for a while too, so we felt we needed to add this rule. You do not need to make all of your posts a certain color. This is highly annoying, and also it makes the text hard to read sometimes. So please, just stick to the default text color. Also, on that same note, don't change the size of your font. This can also make the text difficult to read.
You must post your character with the correct account. If you are logged into one account, and you want to post your other character, then you need to log out. Posting with the wrong character's account makes the boards look all sloppy. Not to mention, it could be confusing to some people. So just make sure to post with the right account. Posting with the wrong one will get you a warning.
When you begin RPing, we'd like for you to try and stay in one thread at a time. However, we understand that some people are busy and post slower than others. It can be frustrating when you yourself have a lot of time and your character is stuck in a slow thread. So we'll look over it if you need to be in two threads at once (maybe even three). But don't go overboard. Three is as many as we'll allow, and you must finish each thread. Do not stop posting in one thread, because you are posting in another one. Finish each thread or make your character leave.
Also, when posting on the boards, please be considerate of your fellow RPers and post in order. If there are three or more characters in a thread, two of them shouldn't go on a posting spree and leave the others lost in the dust. So, say there are three characters in the thread: You should wait for the other two replies before you make another post.
Fights
Fights are allowed here on SC, of course, but we will not tolerate powerplaying or anything like it. Don't know what powerplaying is? It's acting as if you cannot be hurt (not taking hits), moving the other person's character or posting actions for them, making too many moves in one post, not giving the other person a chance to dodge your attack. Those are fine examples of powerplaying.
If caught powerplaying, you will receive a warning. If you do it again, you will be banned. It may seem kind of harsh, but we will not put up with powerplaying. It's annoying and normally ends up causing problems out of character, as well.
Exception: If friends are RPing together and have talked about how the fight will go or are talking about it, simply put a note in one of your posts explaining it has been discussed beforehand. That way, you can post however you want and won't get in trouble. As long as things are agreed on, we don't consider it powerplaying.
During a fight, you cannot kill the other player's character, unless you have their permission. Don't come asking the admins for that permission; you must get it from the player of the character.
Relationships
Yeah, everyone loves this part. Relationships are allowed, just don't get graphic. This site is PG-13. We get some younger members here that don't need to see that sort of thing.
If you wish to get graphic, please do it in an IM off of this forum. ProBoards does not allow anything pornographic, therefore, we cannot allow it either.
Now, for creating your character. As was stated at the very beginning, this is an RP for X-Men related characters only. You may play a character from the comics, movies, or cartoons. Or, of course, you may play a character that you made up entirely on your own.
Canon Characters
Before making a canon character, make sure to check out the 'Canon Characters' thread. There you can find all the rules and stipulations for playing these characters. It also contains a list of all the characters that are taken and/or reserved.
Original Characters
Original characters are characters that are your own creation. They can be either human or mutants. Please, no fantasy creatures like elves, dwarfs or anything like that. This is X-men, not Lord of the Rings. This also includes vampires, werewolves and other mythical creatures of the night.
Human Characters
Human characters are as important to the site as mutant ones. It helps to balance the population of the RP city, since not everyone in the entire world is a mutant. If you choose to create a human character, they will most likely get approved much quicker than the other characters. Their form is rather simple, so there isn't much room for error. It also doesn't require both of the admin's approval. If you want to get into the RP fast, we suggest making a human.
To make a character, fill out one of the forms below. You have to copy and paste it into a new thread, and post it on the 'Character Join Forms' board (or click here). For the thread’s Subject, make it the name of your character.
Once you make a Mutant Character, please wait for us to approve it, before actually playing it. This makes things easier for everyone. Don't worry, at least one of the admins is normally on throughout the day, so you shouldn't have to wait long. Although, there might be an occasional delay, since we make sure that both admins approve of the powers before we post the approval in the thread.
Before you fill out the form, please take a look at the following notes: (these may seem rather obvious, but you’d be surprised some of the things people have put on their forms...)
[Note #1:] The 'Your Nickname:' part of the form is for your Nickname. Not your character's. If you don't want to tell anyone your real name, then just put the name you use on the internet. This is just so people on the site know what to call you. We need a name for you, so don't just leave this blank.
[Note #2:] The 'Portrayed By:' part of the form refers to the picture of your character. In this part of the form, you will put who it is you're using for your character’s image. This helps us to keep the PB List updated and accurate. Again, it is not a place where you put your own name.
[Note #3:] The 'Description' is where you describe your character's appearance, in detail. Personality and history tidbits do not go there.
[Note #4:] Scroll down to find the 'Affiliation:' part explained in detail, below the forms at point 4.
[Note #5:] You may leave the 'How Did You Find This Forum:' part out of the form, if the character you are creating is not your first.
[Final Note:] We've also had a problem with people flatout stealing our form. Please, please, please do not steal our work. It's a very wrong and lazy thing to do, and it may also end up getting you banned from SC. Not only that, but ProBoards is against plagiarism, and we won't hesitate to contact them about our stolen work. This includes our rules, our forms, our board descriptions, everything.

About Your Character:
For humans, general rules apply. It's pretty simple, so no extra explaining there.
For mutants, there are some additional rules:
1. No almighty powers. If you're going to make a mutant that is almost invincible, then give them some weakness- some major weakness.
2. Try to use a power that's not too common. A few examples of 'too common' ones would be telepathy, fire manipulation, rapid healing, shapeshifting, etc.
3. Point three isn't a rule, but just a bit of advice. We're supplying a list of possible mutations that you can look at if you’re stumped for a power. You do not need to use that list when you make your character. It's just there for ideas. And please note: Just because a power is on that list, does not necessarily mean that it will automatically be approved. Also, seriously, don't pick a power off that list if you don't even know what the word entails. Please put some thought into your character's powers.
4. For those of you that are not sure what the 'Affiliation' part of the form means, we shall explain here. Basically, it depends on what group your character is joined up with. Where their allegiance lies. If they're staying at the Institute, their affiliation would be the X-Men or Xavier Institute. If they're a member of the Brotherhood, their affiliation would be the Brotherhood. If they’re a member of the Morlocks, their affiliation would be the Morlocks. If your character isn't associated with any of those, just put N/A or None. (And remember to check out the 'For All Staying At The Institute', if your mutant is over 18 and staying at the Institute.)
5. And once again, remember, your mutant character needs to be approved before you can start playing them. So, wait for an admin to reply to your Join thread before you start posting on the RP boards. Failure to wait will end up getting you a warning. Also, do not PM the admins to bug us about replying to your character’s join thread. We take care of those things as soon as we possibly can, and prodding about it will only make you have to wait longer. Also remember, human characters will get approved faster than mutants. So, if you want to start RPing quickly, you can always make a human.
Spamming
Spamming is pointless posting, that has nothing to do with the current conversation or is posted simply to annoy people. Here on SC, we will not tolerate it. You will be given one warning if caught spamming. After that, you will be banned. Please spare everyone (including yourself) the hassle and don't post those pointless, annoying posts.
Breaking the Rules
We do have a warning system on Senseless Cruelty. And it goes without saying that if you break a rule, you will get warned. There are different types of warnings on SC.
If you just do something minor, and it's your first offense, we'll simply send you a warning PM.
Although, for heavier offenses, we have a more visual warning. Not only will you receive a PM about it, but a red warning level bar will appear on your profile, along with a percentage number and expiration date.
Breaking more rules will increase your level, and if it gets too bad, you will be banned. Whether it's a temporary or permanent ban will depend on the case.
Disclaimer: X-Men belongs to Marvel, obviously, and we’re not claiming any ownership of it.
